Re:  Regional Sourcing of Steelmaking Raw Materials per LEED Canada Requirements

The LEED Canada rating system specifically states under the “Materials and Resources” category that building materials must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Use a minimum of 10% of building materials or products for which at least 80% of the mass extracted, processed and manufactured is within 800 km (500 miles) of the project site.
  • Use minimum of 10% of building materials or products for which at least 80% of the mass extracted, processed and manufactured is within 2,400 km (1,500 miles) of the project site, and shipped by rail or water.

I can confirm that the steel scrap and limestone purchases required for steelmaking operations meet both these regional requirements, and that our coal and iron ore purchases, which arrive by rail and ship, meet the second requirement.  This makes Metal Door’s construction steels eligible for credits under the LEED Canada Green Building Rating System.

All of Metal Door’s products are manufactured in Gormley, ON, Canada.  All material is extracted from Hamilton, ON, Canada.  Metal Door’s mode of transportation for its product is by enclosed transport truck.
